Harlingen's Rising Leaders
BACKGROUND
The implementation of a youth leadership program targeting high school students who would not usually participate in a program of this type was recommended by a city-appointed Juvenile Crime Task Force in 1993. The recommendation was forwarded to the Harlingen Chamber of Commerce and the Harlingen Consolidated Independent School District.
PROGRAM
Through the partnership efforts of the Harlingen C.I.S.D. and the Harlingen Area Chamber of Commerce, an additional leadership program was implemented for the youth of our community. Participants are selected based on their identified leadership potential. Thirty participants will represent Harlingen High School, Harlingen High School South, and KEYS Academy. Student selection is being coordinated through the Harlingen C.I.S.D. New Directions program/Parental Involvement Office.
The program is for students who desire to further develop interpersonal and leadership skills, and become more knowledgeable about various elements that form a strong and dynamic community. Through a series of seminars, panel discussions and activities, participants will become familiar with community needs, services, and resources. They will increase awareness of current issues, community problems, and opportunities by interacting with community leaders and decision makers.
