Harlingen, the healthcare heart of the Valley
Offering a uniquely caring and responsive environment to our citizens.
Harlingen is home to the region’s largest hospital, Valley Baptist Medical Center-Harlingen, a 600-bed acute care hospital serving South Texas and beyond. This modern medical system traces its beginning in Harlingen to 1925 and is truly a hospital created by the community for the community.
With the opening of a second hospital in 2002, Harlingen Medical Center established Harlingen as the health-care heart of the Valley. Named among the nation’s 100 Top Hospitals for cardiovascular care by Thomson Reuters 2008, HMC is a general acute care hospital led by physicians specializing in cardiovascular care, orthopedics, neurology, obstetrics and gynecology.
Also home to Harlingen is the Regional Academic Health Center, part of the University of Texas Health Science Center at San Antonio. Third and fourth year medical students divide their time between classroom-based courses and attending rounds with doctors and 13 newly graduated doctors are guided through a three-year Internal Medicine residency program.
The South Texas Veterans Health Care Center Harlingen, located on the campus of the Regional Academic Health Center, provides outpatient care and services to approximately 500 qualified veterans daily. The Center’s focus on primary care and specialty medicine reflects a response to specific health problems faced by Valley veterans. The state-of-the-art facility includes optometry services, dental care, audiology, physical and occupational therapy, a laboratory, a radiology department with a CT scanner and an outpatient surgical suite for colonoscopies. In December 2010, a 100,000 square foot VA outpatient surgical center will open nearby.
Su Clinica Familiar, founded in 1971, is a 62,000 square foot, multi-specialty clinic providing quality health services to people in Cameron and Willacy Counties. The clinic maintains four program/service delivery sites and provides services such as pharmacy, laboratory, dental, WIC, radiology, social services, family planning, HIV/AIDS testing and counseling, health education, and nutrition counseling.
Nestled in the middle of Harlingen’s Health Care community, the beautiful Rio Grande Valley Ronald McDonald House provides a comfortable home environment to families of children receiving local medical care.
