Harlingen Heritage Trail
Key Years in Harlingen History
1902 - Lon C. Hill begins buying land to sell as
irrigated farms.
1904 - First passenger train passes through Harlingen enroute to
Brownsville.
1905 - Hill's house is first built on the 543-acre Harlingen
townsite.
1909 - First grave in Harlingen dug for Robert Weems, who fell into
a vat of cane syrup.
1910 - City incorporated First City Marshall, E. W. Anglin, is paid
$50 per month.
1912 - Volunteer Fire Department is established after hydrants and
water system installed.
1917 - Bandits raiding from Mexico burn Hill Sugar Mill.
1921 - 24 hour electric service begins.
1925 - Valley Baptist Hospital opens.
1933 - Fierce September hurricane destroys many homes and
businesses.
1941 - Air Gunnery School opens at Harlingen Army Air Field.
1962 - Harlingen AFB closes, devastating the economy.
1963 - City's advertising campaign brings in Midwest retirees who
buy 576 houses.
1967 - James Connally Technical Institute (now Texas State Technical
College) opens. Hurricane Beulah hits.
1970 - Sam Lozano, whose ancestor bought the first lot on Jackson
Street, sworn in as city's first Hispanic mayor.
1989 - Downtown Improvement District established.
1994 - Passage of NAFTA causes surge in border business development.
2002 - Regional Academic Health Center opens
